Recurrent Pregnancy Loss, defined as two or more consecutive miscarriages, is a devastating condition that causes grief for many couples.

Many couples may experience a pregnancy loss, especially an early loss in the first trimester. This does not carry with it an increased risk of having pregnancy loss in the future. Having two or more miscarriages, however, places a couple at a much higher statistical chance of having repeated miscarriages moving forward.

What causes Recurrent Pregnancy Loss?

The causes of Recurrent Pregnancy Loss are many and complex. Couples suffering from Recurrent Pregnancy Loss deserve a thorough and thoughtful evaluation to help guide therapies that will maximize their chances for a good outcome.  For more than half of couples with Recurrent Pregnancy Loss, a detailed diagnostic evaluation will show possible causes for the pregnancy loss. Some common causes of Recurrent Pregnancy Loss include anatomic defects in the uterus, genetic factors, hormonal imbalances, and auto immune abnormalities.

For many women with Recurrent Pregnancy Loss in the first trimester, the cause can be attributed to abnormalities in the way the genetic material of the embryo’s DNA is formed. In most of these cases, the parents themselves have no genetic abnormalities.  Some experts believe that up to half of first trimester miscarriages are due to this type of genetic imbalance in the embryo.  Thankfully, genetic testing for this problem is now available to address this issue.
